Training Information for Potential Learners within the
Practice
Langford Medical Practice is a well established training
practice. There are currently 2 trainers, David Grimshaw and Richard
Jones. David is currently the lead trainer within the
practice, but is keen to involve all members of the practice team as
appropriate. He was involved with pioneering the introduction of
foundation stage training in general practice within the deanery,
but has also been training registrars for 4 years. He has a
reasonably academic background but tries not to let this get in the
way of humanity and common sense! Richard has a very extensive
background in training including being a previous course organiser,
a CPD tutor and has been an MRCGP examiner for 12 years. He is a
member of the oral development group and simulated surgery group of
the current MRCGP and of late has been very involved in the
implementation of the nMRCGP, particularly the Clinical Skills
Assessment. He is an Associate Director within the Oxford Deanery
with responsibility for recruitment, including the recent
introduction of a GP assessment centre locally.
We are part of the Banbury training scheme within the Oxford
deanery. We endorse the aim of the scheme to provide excellent
learner centred education in an Oxford Radcliffe linked DGH with
first-rate GP training practices. In addition to protected learning
time with a program of tutorials negotiated as to the relevant
learning needs of the individual, we are extremely keen that the
learner becomes as involved as possible in the everyday running of
the practice and also he/she is very welcome to participate in the
coffee room chat where every day issues which crop up are discussed
and chewed over - in medicine and beyond. The wider practice team
staff greatly value the presence of fresh doctors within the
practice. Over the years we have increasingly learnt that the
training experience works best by challenging the registrasr/F2s,
but within a appropriately supportive learning environment such that
patient safety is assured. A high emphasis is put on the use of
videoing consultations as a means of teaching consultation skills.
We attempt to see change as opportunity rather than threat. Above
and beyond all we hope to show that general practice should be both
interesting and fun, although this is put in the context of the very
sad situations with which we unfortunately sometimes need to deal.
If any further information is required then please feel free to
contact either David or Richard. Informal visits can be arranged,
and we would also be happy to put you in touch with past or present
learners if that would be helpful.
